Princeton Undergraduate Architecture majors will be in Pittsfield to present their research into the legacy of Urban Renewal. The reception will feature a community conversation around the potential for future urban infill strategies on remaining vacant land.
Fifty years ago this fall, in 1973, Urban Renewal demolitions in Pittsfield concluded. In total, Urban Renewal cleared 86 acres of land and 200 structures adjacent to Downtown Pittsfield.
Pittsfield was one of the last total-clearance projects financed by the federal government. The Urban Renewal program came to a close under criticism for its high cost, frequent failure, and disruption of lives, businesses, and neighborhoods.
From the City of Pittsfield Master Plan: “Economic sustainability requires creating a place where people want to be.” We hope this project inspires you to work toward creating that place.
