The reduction woodblock printing that Joan uses involves carving away sections of a single block to produce multi-color images. At the end of a series the block is completely carved away. The dry felting process involves layering various colors of wool using specialized barbed needles to combine loose wool fibers. \n  \nSanctum Gallery\, 148 North Street\, will present the art of award-winning Navajo painter Walter Dan during the First Fridays Artswalk on Friday\, May 1 from 5 to 8 pm. \nMonica White will be showcasing the celebrated work of her father\, Walter Dan\, a renowned Navajo artist. The exhibition offers visitors a rare chance to experience the depth\, tradition\, and storytelling of Navajo painting through Walter Dan’s powerful artwork. Monica will share the powerful stories of her father’s art with us. “Sharing my father’s work is a way to honor our family and culture\,” said White. “Each piece carries the history\, spirit\, and creativity of our heritage.” \nWalter’s paintings consist of serene southwestern life with landscapes\, animals\, and portraits most influenced by his Diné and cowboy culture. Walter focuses on using acrylic\, oil\, pencil\, and ink. He was an art student at the Institute of American Indian Arts-IAIA in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, in the early 1970’s. Walter’s most prominent influence and mentor is Allen Houser\, a highly regarded Native American artist\, and his IAIA instructor. \n  \nPittsfield High School will present its Senior Show and AP Placement Portfolios for the month of May at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts\, 28 Renne Avenue. These dedicated students have spent years developing their artistic voices\, often taking multiple art classes throughout their high school journey. His art reflects his personal life experiences\, particularly his time living and traveling abroad. Before becoming a full-time artist in Pittsfield\, Peter lived and taught science in Belgium\, Brazil\, Mexico\, England\, Italy\, and California. “I appreciate the challenge of working in marble and its potential to last for centuries. SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Let It Shine! Artist Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. will feature a brand-new “Let It Shine! Artist Exhibition” featuring 4 local artists at 437 North Street. \nFeatured artists are Carly Holmes\, Riley Wilde\, Jesus Alicea\, and Kenny Davis. There will be an opening reception with the artists during the August 1st First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. The exhibition will be on view Monday through Thursday\, 10 am to 2 pm\, August 1 through August 25\, by visiting the Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. offices at 431 North Street. \nCarly Holmes is a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and describes herself as an emerging artist with a passion for creating art. “I have always loved creating art\,” Carly says. “As a child\, I was constantly drawing and crafting. I have explored drawing\, ceramics\, and 3-dimensional design. But painting with acrylics is where my true passion lies. I view my work as a reflection of my ever-evolving interests\, and as a personal outlet for self-expression.” \nThe Pittsfield Let It Shine! Public Art Partnership has selected Carly to co-create a new mural to be located at the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority Intermodal Center alongside mentor artist\, Jesse Tobin McCauley. The mural will debut at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this summer. Carly is also the City of Pittsfield’s inaugural artist-in-residence\, and she is currently working out of studio space in the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts. \nRiley Wilde’s journey as an aspiring visual artist began in 2021 and has become vital in expressing herself in ways that words can’t anymore. Each painting is led by intuition and always with a new approach to create a vibrant and intriguing piece of work. \n“Sustainability is key to my process\, as it doesn’t feel right unless I’m practicing with a considerate mindset\,” says Riley. “Using recycled bottles for paint\, repurposing old canvases\, and catching excess drips to create new pieces is the only way I practice. Trying not to waste anything — creatively or emotionally.” \n“In the last year\, I’ve been expanding my practice while in collaboration with my partner and fellow artist\, Daniel Stone\, on some very large pieces. He has also challenged me to consider working with new surfaces\, styles\, and methods. Such as\, creating reliefs\, mosaics\, illustrating figures\, and using acrylic and wood surfaces. This has been rewarding and valuable in my growth as an artist and has made me feel seen. I’m looking forward to what my work continues to evolve into. Sometimes it’s messy and weird\, but also alive. A reflection of everything I’ve survived and everything I’ve yet to bloom into.” \nJesus Alicea is a multidisciplinary artist driven by a deep love for language and visual storytelling. His work explores the relationship between words and images—through logo design\, poster art\, cartoons\, poetry\, and creative writing. \nJesus creates playful yet purposeful visuals\, often using illustrated characters to deliver promotional messages in ways that text or live action can’t. “My design work focuses on clarity and meaning\, whether I’m crafting a logo or composing a visual narrative\,” says Jesus. \n“Storytelling is at the core of my practice. Through poetry and media projects\, I aim to connect with audiences in ways that are both creative and accessible. Ma’leek will be popped up in Palace Park (near 122 North Street)\, inviting the community to watch him create live and discussing his process with all who are interested. \nMa’leek Adams-Powell is a multidisciplinary artist from Pittsfield\, Massachusetts\, working between the Berkshires and NYC. His work blends graffiti\, mixed media\, and 3D Elements; often using old spray paint cans\, large canvases\, and overlooked material to explore memory\, decay\, and survival. Rooted in hip-hop and childhood nostalgia\, Ma’leek paints the beauty in what’s broken or overlooked. His mission is simple: to be seen amongst the rubble when everything else fades. “Art is my record. My resistance. A reminder that I was here.” \nIn the case of inclement weather\, “Art in the Park” with Ma’leek Adams-Powell will be inside the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts at 28 Renee Avenue. \n  \n

The exhibition will feature photography of Southwest America\, specifically of Arizona\, Utah\, and Colorado. \nThere will be an opening reception with the artist on Sunday\, April 6\, 10 am to 12 pm; and the artist will host a second reception during the May 2 First Fridays Artswalk from 5 to 8 pm. \nAllan Seppa’s exhibition will be on view Monday through Thursday\, 10 am to 2 pm\, April 7 through May 22\, by visiting the Downtown Pittsfield\, Inc. offices at 431 North Street. \nAllan started being serious about photography in the late 1960’s\, when he bought his first 35mm SLR film camera and signed up for the comprehensive correspondence course offered by the former Famous Photographers School of Westport\, Connecticut. Soon after moving to the Berkshires\, Allan joined the venerable Berkshire Museum Camera Club. During the many years that he was a member\, he won many awards for his color slides in competitions within the club and ones sponsored by the New England Camera Club Council (NECCC). Allan’s photographic vision is eclectic and includes landscapes\, seashorescapes\, cityscapes\, still lifes\, and street photography. Upon retirement\, he has exhibited his photos in many gallery and arts & craft shows and other events\, including seven First Fridays Artswalks. Allan lives in Pittsfield. Besides photography\, he enjoys hiking and bicycling with his wife. \n
